Seeing her son dying infront of her eyes outraged an Afghan mother. She picked a gun and started shooting at nearby Taliban fighters. In the seven hours lasting fight Reza Gul and her family killed 25 Taliban and wounded several others.
Gul’s son worked as a police officer in Farah province and was deployed at a checkpoint at the time of the attack. The Taliban made an ambush and assaulted the checkpoint near Gul’s house. After having been woken up by gun shots, she rushed outside and saw her son dying. Gul run back into her house and took a gun. When she started to shoot back at the Taliban her daughter and daughter-in-law joined her with light and heavy weapons. It didn’t take long until Gul’s husband took a gun and fired back, too. Their youngest son provided his family with bullets.
In the end the family defeated the Taliban, who have yet to comment the fight. Afghan government employees already stress this as an example of public resistance against the Taliban, who are currently gaining strength. The young son sees the Taliban as foreigners used by Pakistan to control Afghanistan. He vowed to fight them so that they don’t “dare to enter my village”.
